I have lived and worked in Spain for nearly 15 years and the changes I have seen are amazing.
When I first came here you had to speak Spanish or you would not have got jobs, friends etc. Now if you can't be bothered to learn it doesnt matter. I think this is a real shame. The Spanish as a nation are a bit too accomodating when it comes to foreigners. Do yourselves a favour and really try to learn Spanish. You would npt believe the excuses people have told me over the years for why they can't learn. If you want ot speak Spanish then you will learn, its as simple as that.

Hi, I have lived here approx 2.5years & self-teach spanish at home as do not have the money to pay a tutor. Have totally fitted in with the locals, got a job paying into the tax/health system etc.
Recently was told I am now living in an illegal build!
Apparently it went to court earlier this year without my being informed & is now awaiting a bigger trial in a bigger court. Due to this mess I find myself now in & with the possibility to lose my only home, paid for in good faith with all my money from my house sale in the UK, I have had meetings with spanish lawyers & it now seems to have gone against me with my case for the courts.
Before I moved here, I did not read or speak or write the language. But, because I have been capable of holding meetings in spanish, the courts are now questioning my honesty with regards that perhaps I did know what I was buying & doing throughout the purchase etc.
I am now having to try to defend myself & prove to the un-just law here in Spain that I have totally integrated & self-taught in the time that I have lived here. They are trying to pin the blame & corruptness onto myself & not the legal people that I used to buy the property with etc. I have many legal documents (what is legal in Spain?) to prove my innocence in the matter yet all they seem bothered about is letting off the true crooks in the matter & pinning the blame onto me.
So, learning the language & showing very willing to integrate, I now find has been my downfall. !!!
