For anyone due to go to Elche police station to obtain your residencia.

Been today and all I can say is what a long drawn out process for a ten minute job of them issuing the residencia.

Today started off with a 5am wake up. Followed by several strong cups of coffee to tell my brain that time does exist in Spain before 10am.

We had pre done all the paperwork and payed the fee at the bank ready for the trip.

On arrival at Elche police station at 6:15 there was already a que 50 deep.
They issue between 80 to 100 residencias per day.

Some people had got there at 5am to get low numbers

Its worth taking a collapsible chair with you, a flask of drink and a book to read, because you now wait until 8am when they issue tickets in order of the people in the que.

We were told to return at about 10am in case they were moving through the line of people quickly.

If you wait by the door, a man comes out calling the numbers in Spanish, in batches for people to enter the building.

Once in, the whole process is very simple, with the lady on the desk speaking good English.

Once you have your number, there is a bar within easy walking distance of the police station to grab a coffee and a bite to eat.

With your back to the entrance door, follow the road off round to the left, following the school wall. There are several bars just down there

Maybe a stupid question but... is 'residencia' the same as the 'NIE-number'-procedure?

We are looking forward to that one (we saw the queue in Alicante and plan to try it in Elche or Orihuela)

Hi Lee,

Can you please tell me where did you obtain the paperwork, what did it consist of and what documents you had to take to the Police Station.

Thanks

Ken

Bit muzzy headed this morning after being dragged down Ryan's bar screaming all the way

There is a help sheet on the vega baja help association web site, which should help
http://www.helpvegabaja.com/pdf/residencia.pdf

I did mine over a year ago and at the time it was a case of getting there at silly oclock in the morning. Someone said recently that because there are less people moving over now, the q´s are not as bad as they used to be.

It looks like they keep changing the process

When we did ours, you payed the money at the bank, got a receipt and then went to the main police station in Elche with your paperwork. It was as simple as that.
