The other day, a senior police officer, Sr. Manuel Piedrabuena, told a police conference about a new activity of robbers on secondary roads.

This information comes from a good policeman who wants people throughout Spain to be aware of what is going on.

It seems that a gang, mainly Rumanian including people from Bulgaria and Poland, are disguising themselves as Guardia Civil, with similar uniforms, tri-corn hats, but non-standard pistols.

They even have cars similar to those of the Guardia Civil.

Because their disguise is not very effective in the light of day, they do their dirty work at night.

They wait until a car appears and stop it at the side of the road.

They say that they are checking for drink driving and the result of their test is always positive even if you have not been drinking. Naturally, most people will challenge this result and that is when their game starts.

They will tell you that perhaps the machine is not working properly but that they have another machine fixed in their car which will determine the result.

THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE LIE!

As soon as you get into their car they will rob you of everything, money, credit cards, mobile phone and whatever they find in your car. The big problem is that they can use your cards straight away and you can do nothing because they are in control.

The Guardia Civil NEVER ask you to leave your car and they NEVER ask you to take a breathe test in their car.

On some occasions they can be very, very violent.

Be very careful if you are stopped by the Guardia Civil on secondary roads; keep your mobile phone ready so that you can call the POLICE.

If you keep reporting this gang which is causing havoc we will break up the entire organisation and their numbers will be reduced.

We must all watch out and use the power of the internet and the public to fight this threat.

If we allow this gang to get away with it, all the other criminals will be headed for Spain.

SEND THIS MESSAGE TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL OF US.

Well ,,Romanians or not, we are stuffed if we stop and stuffed if we don't......The Romanians (or wharever they are) will rob us if we stop and ,should we not stop , the GC will shoot us..

How do we avoid either situation without risking the other ?

From what I remember this was reported as going on all over Spain.

In the last six months there were reports of bogus police check points at night in the area I live.

In the original email I posted here, they mentioned the guys were armed. What chance have you got at resisting an armed robber

Service stations are one of the places you need to be on your guard. You hear of a lot of people not locking their cars when they get out and having the passenger door opened and valuables stolen.

People say Spain is bad, but there are areas of the UK that are just as bad, where you tie your granny down so she dont get stolen.

This story is without substance. If you research it you will discover ith is an "Urban Myth" which first appeared several years ago.... yes there are some problems on the roads but nothing on this scale and certainly not by Romanians in Police cars and uniforms......How long do you really think a fake GC car would stay on the road??? Exactly

This has been reported in Coastrider Roundtown news and The Costa blanca News.in the last year. The e_mail was started by english speaking Ex pats maybe someone returning home trying to cause troble. The Policeman quoted does not exist as confimed by the Guardia. There ars soo many stupid stories going around and most seem to originate fron the letter pages of the local papers. Anyone can write in and state anything, For example I know a man who several years ago wrote in and stated that the Guardia impounded his legal English Reg car and crushed it because it should be on Spanish plates. After I got to know him I found out he ran a company that put English reg cars on Spanish plates. BE AWARE>.

Also at most check points the Guardia usualy have at least one Mercedes-Benz Vito van marked with Trafico stickers and usualy accompanied by a normal squad car (most common are Opel Astra´s) also marked with Trafico stickers at their checkpoints.

If you only see one car then its probably not a good idea to stop.

A single unit stopping cars late at night is unheard of.
