I have a Gamo Hunter .25 break barrel air rifle which I assume is somewhere around 18 or 20 ft/lbs. Is it possible to get a stronger spring for this? Is it worthwhile? Is it a diy job.....if I ask a local gunsmith am I likely to get locked up? Is there anything else I can do to boost it up a bit?

If you purchased the rifle in Spain it should be around the 18ft/lbs level
If you purchased it in the UK it will be under 12ft/lbs

Non fac power limit is 18ft/lbs for Spain

So going to a gun smith to twaek it as such is a no no

Bung it over a chrono and get more idea if it is shooting under power

It surely isn'y below par as the pellets completely flatten when shot against 4 mm steel sheet at 50 metres.....I just want even more power and hopefully a flatter trajectory.

Its the caliber your shooting that causes the problems you have with the loopy tajectory. If you had gone for 177, you would of had a much flatter trajectory straight out the box.

177 is favoured for target shooting, because it is more forgiving. Less hold over/ under at most ranges and compared to .25

If you run a comparison through chairgun
ChairGun.Com - Download Centre

You will see the difference in trajectory over any distance

All my own target rifles that have been used in competition shooting are 177 and there are .22's thrown in for luck with their cosmetic looks.

Its a pity your not a bit closer or I would have run your rifle over my chrono and been able to show the difference between the trajectories on the calibers

Hi,
I think the Gamo hunter/Real Tree/Maxima (all the same power plant) are listed at doing 170 - 180 m/s and this is sure to be with Gamo's own Hunter .25 pellet, so expect in the region of 16 ft lbs max. I agree with Lee, your best bet is to bung it over a Chrono to find out where its at, although if your not satisfied with the results its difficult to suggest a COA as regards upping the power (keeping within 18 ft lbs limit obviously). Chamber's may do a kit for the Hunter and there is always the possibility of a Gas Ram, but I really think that .25 under say, 30 ft lbs muzzle energy (see Webley Patriot), is always going to seem too loopy. Its a good close range ratting calbre (which would be a totally illegal use of the gun here in Spain, of course), but apart from that I don't feel its the best calibre in springers, better in FAC rated PCP's.
