News from Spain
A deep-sea cable almost 240 kilometres long will carry electricity from mainland Spain to the Balearic Islands from 2010, grid operator Red Electrica de Espana (REE) announced Wednesday.
The cable, the first of its kind in Spain and one of only a handful of deep-sea electrical connections in the world, will supply 400 megawatts of power to the islands which have until now relied on electricity produced there. Rising energy demand and concerns about the stability of supply, make the EUR 375-million project necessary, Ramon Granadino, REE's director in the Balearics, said in a press conference in Palma de Majorca.
"It will save money for consumers here," he noted, adding that it should also help cut carbon emissions in the islands.
The cable will run at a depth of up to 1,485 metres between Sagunto in Valencia and Santa Ponça in the southwest of the island of Majorca.
