EXPAT PENSIONER STUCK WITH WIFE´S DEAD BODY,
The latest news from Spain and the Costa Blanca,
An 82-year-old disabled man spent a week stuck in a Spanish holiday apartment with his wife's decomposing body after he slipped as he tried to call for help. The British pensioner was discovered by staff at the apartment complex after neighbours complained about a smell and police found the man, who has been identified only as Raymond, lying unconscious on the floor next to his wheelchair. The body of his 58-year-old wife Barbara was in an armchair, with her body in an advanced state of decomposition after she apparently died of natural causes.Police think that the man tried to raise the alarm when his wife was initially taken ill but had slipped from his wheelchair and fallen to the floor with one of his legs trapped beneath a fallen television set. The pensioner was taken to hospital where he is now recovering from the experience and meanwhile police reconstructed events from the position of furniture in the apartment and have ruled out any criminal activity. They believe that the wife's body showed no sign of violence and that she could have been dead for at least a week, while the man was trapped and unable to call for help because of his disability. The Foreign Office confirmed that a British national had died and that her husband was in hospital and receiving assistance from the British Consul who said, "We can confirm the death of a British national and the hospitalisation of another in Benalmadena, southern Spain," said a spokesman. "Consular staff have visited the hospital and police are investigating the incident."The couple had rented the apartment in Benalmadena, near Malaga from a private owner.
