The flamenco dancer Farruquito, who is currently serving a three-year jail sentence for running down and killing a pedestrian, will be allowed to serve the rest of his sentence on day release, a spokesman from the prisons authority revealed yesterday.
Farruquito, whose real name is Juan Manuel Fernández Montoya, was jailed on 16 January 2007, after being sentenced to three years for the hit-and-run killing of Benjamín Olalla in Seville in September 2003.
Farruquito was driving his BMW, despite having neither a driving license nor insurance at the time. His younger brother - a minor at the time - initially took the blame for the incident, adding to the charges against the dancer.
The judge also instructed the dancer to pay a monthly fine for a period of 12 months, which will total EUR 72,000 when paid off in full. He was also forced to pay compensation in excess of EUR 100,000 to the victim's family.
Since being incarcerated, Farruquito has been regularly paroled for good behaviour.
While on day release, he will only have to return to the prison to sleep. He will be granted this status while he can prove to the authorities that he is in employment.
