Multilingual Volunteers Wanted,
The AECC hospital volunteers showed off their new t-shirts last Tuesday at Torrevieja Hospital.
This dedicated team of 22 volunteers has an office in the basement of the new Hospital, between the café and the information desk and gives up their time one morning a week to come in to the hospital and try to make the cancer patients’ time there as pleasant as possible. Jenny Mutter, who is the AECC press officer, explained to the ‘Leader’ that the job so satisfying. “You meet lovely people going through very difficult times, but they are generally all very positive. They make you put things into perspective and you feel humbled by their attitude.”
Each morning two English speaking and two Spanish speaking volunteers come into the Hospital at 9.30am and serve coffee to the outpatients, they then visit patients in their rooms, giving them a bit of company and moral support. Before they leave at 2.30pm they serve sandwiches and juice in the day hospital, as many of the out patients spend 6 or 8 hours in one visit. “The day flies by.” The few hours a week they dedicate to this work can make a world of difference to the patients.
Laura, the coordinator, explains that the system has been functioning since last May. A training day is held every two months for the volunteers, but they are currently looking for others who are able to give a few hours a week, especially volunteers who speak other languages, who could be called upon when necessary. “We occasionally have Russian or Lithuanian patients for example, who could do with some moral support.” Anyone who speaks a different language and has a little spare time would be greatly appreciated.
All the volunteers are going to take part in Chris’s Keep Fit Walk on April 26th. The walk is now in its 13th year and all the money raised will go to the Scanner Appeal. About 300 walkers are expected, so it’s going to be a big day. The team is still looking for sponsor money, so if anyone would like to contribute to the fund they can see Laura in the AECC office in the Hospital, mornings only, or call 965 716 679. On Wednesday mornings the phones are manned by English speakers.
All the volunteers claim no expenses whatsoever. They receive no payment. So all the money raised will go, in its entirety, to the scanner appeal.
