Spain news

Valencia and Murcia are demanding that their regions also be fed with water from the Ebro river in Cataluña
Murcia and Valencia have threatened to place an appeal before the Constitutional Court against the Government’s plans to run a new 60km long pipeline from Tarragona to Barcelona to supply the city of Barcelona with drinking water. The planned pipe will be fed from an existing feed to Tarragona which takes water from the mouth of the Ebro river.

During the election campaign the Socialists said that they would not be transferring water in such a way, and the regional governments of Murcia and Valencia are now demanding that their dry regions, and that of Almería, also be served by such pipelines.

The decision to turn to the Constitutional Court was taken after a three and a half hour meeting held in Valencia today between the Partido Popular Presidents of Murcia, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, and Valencia, Francisco Camps. The two leaders told the press that they had decided on a common strategy in water policy.

They also said that, for now at least, they will not call any demonstration, but if the Prime Minister does not approve a water transfer for them from the Ebro at the cabinet meeting tomorrow, then they will place the appeal at the Constitutional Court.
