Severo Moto has been living in Spain with political asylum since 1986
The opposition leader of Equatorial Guinea, Severo Moto, was arrested on Monday night in Fuensalida, Toledo, in Spain, as part of a police operation against arms trafficking. The arrest was ordered by the Spanish National Court judge, Fernando Andreu.
Severo Moto has been in Spain with political asylum since 1986, but this condition was overturned by the cabinet in 2005, although the Supreme Court ruled on appeal last March that it still stood.
El Mundo reports that Moto is allegedly linked to a network which introduced arms illegally into Equatorial Guinea and comes after several arms were found in Sagunto port in Valencia last March 6, hidden in the boot of an old car which was about to board a ferry.
Moto has been taken to the main police station in Canillas in Madrid. A statement from the Spanish National Intelligence Service, CNI, said only that the presence of the opposition leader represented a risk to the country.
Severo Moto was sentenced by the authorities in Guinea to 101 years in prison last year, on charges of being a traitor, and attempted murder of the head of state among others.
