Rory McIlroy’s impressive first round of 63 gave him a two-stroke lead over the rest of the field in yesterday’s Omega European Masters.
The Northen Irishman shot 8-under par, which included nine birdies and a bogey atthe 12th to set the early pace. The 19 year old, 89th on the European Order of Merit,set an impressive benchmark for the rest of the field early on.
"You get days when you read the lines perfectly and you know every putt is going in,"said McIlroy who had missed cuts during the last three weeks. "I've only been missingcuts by one or two shots," he said. "I just feel like I've been making silly mistakes.I feel once I have a little bit of form, I won't make them."
Welshman Garry Houston chipped in on the 18th for a share of second place with compatriotKyron Sullivan and Argentine Julio Zapata. A group of 8 players shot 4-under withMiguel Angel Jiminez a further shot back on 3-under and Kiwi Michael Campbell at 2-under.
