First it was the Olympics and now women’s golf is looking to exploit the Chinese market. The Suzhou Taihu Ladies Open, tri-sanctioned by the Ladies Asian Golf Tour (LAGT), Ladies European Tour (LET) and the China Golf Association, will be the first professional event to take place in China.
"It's our first event ever in China and will be a historic occasion for us," AlexArmas, executive director of the Ladies European Tour said. "At a time of year whenthe weather in Europe is turning against us, it's important to be able to extend theTour's season and give our players an opportunity to come here to compete.”
Annika Sorenstam welcomes the move. "It's great to see that the Suzhou Taihu LadiesOpen 2008 is a true international event with not only competitors from the LadiesEuropean Tour but also a large number from Asia, and particularly from China,” shesaid. “China represents the future and I would love to see women's golf develop stronglythere."
The event kicks off on October 30th at the Suzhou Taihu International Golf Club inJiangsu province. A prize purse of 200,000 euros is up for grabs so expect to seea lot of well-known faces in the field.
