Simple things like carrying spare bulbs and tools needed to change them in the car, I believe its two warning triangles, along high viz vests inside the car so they can be put on prior to exiting the car if you break down.

Halfords used to do bulb kits for most makes and models of cars. I doubt if the police would check if its the right bulb kit for your model of car

Another tip for the high viz vests is to put one on prior to exiting the car if you get pulled by the police and asked to get out the car. One of their little tricks for giving instant fines.

There has been a recent police clamp down on British plated cars in Spain.

So carry a copy of your ferry crossing details or eurotunnel bill as proof of when you brought the car over inside the car with your documents. This should be enough to save you a lot of heart ache and unwanted fines.

Its also worth checking if your MOT or road tax is due to expire while your over. The tax disk being the dead give away to if a car is road legal for England.

Also carry a couple of hundred euro's in cash with you. Pay a fine on the spot and the very nice police officers will give you a discount for paying on the spot.

Watch your speeds when driving through towns and built up areas. This is where the gestapo in police uniforms got me on my drive to Spain.
Mobile camera hidden up and some nice police officers waiting round the corner to give the fine

There are a couple of good insurers on the Costa Blanca. Linear directa and knights. I found with my own car that Knights will try to beat a Linear Directa quote. So its is worth shopping round and sometimes seeing if they can beat each other for quotes.

You will be limited to the insurers that will insure a UK plated car

If you use a Spanish insurer, most supply break down cover in the fee. So no need for AA or RAC cover.

Good luck with your trip down

Carry two or three forms of plastic for driving through France. I had two cards rejected after using each one several times filling up. So my visa card worked well for the first one or two fills then got rejected, then my master card and then onto my other visa card.

Nothing worse than being in France in the first place, let alone with a card not being rejected at a petrol station

Trust me finding that my mobile phone would not work when trying to phone the bank, because I had not set it to operate in Europe went down well. And of course you could only contact the phone contract supplier from the UK.

So its worth checking your mobile phone contract prior to leaving the UK.

Totally uneventful drive to Spain when I moved down

Contact your UK car insurance about European cover. Two years ago when I moved over, I brought my right hand drive car down like an idiot.

Problem was I needed a UK address to have UK car insurance (something like that any way) And they would only insure the car for x amount of days or weeks outside of the UK.

My problem was, even though I had UK car insurance and a certificate to wing my way out of any check by police, in theory I was not insured if an accident occurred.

But there are insurers in Spain that will insure British registered cars as long as they are road legal in England. Check the small print on the policy. We all know what car insurance is like on a good day, let alone a bad day.

To be legal, is the basics of road tax and mot. Road tax, I believe you can contact Swansea about if its going to run out while your out the country. I seem to remember seeing something on the DVLA web site when I was importing a car.

Car insurance is also comparable to the UK prices if not cheaper in Spain. The insurance is done differently by covering anyone over a certain age. In my case, mines insured for anyone over 40 (horrid age to hit) as opposed to just me being the named driver.

If your UK car insurance will not cover you for the duration of your trip, get the cover for 14 days or what ever they offer, then check with the insurance companies down here for a policy.

As far as the TV goes, find out off the people your renting off, just what is in the house or apartment. If they have an ariel, you might get away with a cheap Spanish freeview box that plugs between the TV and ariel. You wont get BBC or ITV with that system, but some television programs are broadcast in dual language format. What that means is some programs have Spanish dubbing with the original language being broadcast. So you can view the programs with English language if they were originally recorded in English.

Thanks so much for all this info Lee.

I've been reading about the telmicro fiasco, so was exploring alternatives, given the situation is so up in the air with people having to find alternative solutions. I suspect a spanish freeview with dual is a cheap option which might be fine for us as the apt is advertised with TV/DVD only . If we can get a freeview box we can watch some stuff in english and spend more time imporoving our spanish

Just thought i'd pass on my experience with getting car insurance to help others in the future.

I got on the phone and was passed from insurer to insurer, until i eventually got a quote from a company called HIC (hertsinsurance.com) they offered a policy that they had tailored for people who want to tour europe in a camper van for 6 months.

the price was approx £500 (306 deisel estate)

having got the quote i shall probably heed advice and get 30 days europe cover and then reinsure in spain

Just looked at the Saga website.
For all their polices they have cover in the EU for an unlimited period at no extra cost.
