paullaugh has asked for more information about the Spanish freeview system I'm using on my laptop. I will be updating this post today with pictures of the system Im using and as much information as I can add. This is an alternative way of getting tv, which is another way of getting tv which does not mean having a big satellite dish, spending hours downloading tv programmes off of the internet, fitting a new ariel and receiver or trying to beat the British tv companies at blocking you from viewing programs. IMO it is a very viable alternative for those with space issues, cut television ariel leads where telmicro have altered their television ariel set ups etc etc. OK, you will not get BBC, ITV etc, but you will get some programs in English. Spanish TDT is the Spanish version of UK freeview. Lots of Spanish channels broadcast in believe it or not Spanish, but some are also broadcast with a second language channel as in the original language the program or film was recorded in. So it is a bit hit or miss as to what you will get to view. As you will also note through this, I will give an honest opinion along with any pro's and cons to the system. First off the system Im using cost 80 euros from Media Mrkt in Elche. Its made by a German company called TerraTec.
Contents of the box, is all you need to hook your pc up and receive Spanish freeview television
In the picture above, you see the remote control, short usb etension lead, usb2 receiver (the orange ended bit), the ariel that is not much bigger than a ball point pen in length, an additional adapter, so you can change the supplied ariel for a normal one plus the leads so you can get tv pictures on your pc from other sources such as video recorders etc etc. You will also find two disks in the box which are your drivers and two software packages. Check that your own computer is compatible with the receiver. Setting up is easy to do, follow the quick set up instructions that are included. This took me about five minutes. Plug the receiver in, put the driver disk in, let windows find the drivers then load the main tv viewing software. Once loaded, run the software and do a scan. I found that rather than scanning for a set region, you have the choice of Spain, UK etc etc, I set it to scan all. When setting it scan Spain, I got little or no results, on scanning all, I ended up with 32 television channels plus quite a few radio stations. You may need to move the ariel around to get best reception. A cheap and simple add on to achieve better ariel placement, is a usb extension lead. These come in varying lengths. But you are limited to a maximum of five meters on standard usb extension leads. There are ways of going past this, but another type of lead is needed. Once everything is tuned in and fired up, the main questions people will no doubt be asking are Picture quality Picture quality is very good, along with the sound. I would try and compare the quality to being somewhere near hd tv picture quality. Its that good Stations Im getting with not much other than using the above
Im going to have to load the lap top up with screen capture software to get the list needed for this. As I say there are 32 channels
As I mentioned earlier I will try and update this thread with more information over the next couple of days.
The software that comes with the tv receiver is much better than I thought it would be as well, with options for recording tv, teletext options, whats on and even signal strength. Plus the all important option of changing the sound track, if the option is being boadcast.
This in my own opinion is definitely a good fix for those that dont mind watching tv on their computers.
Are not bothered what they watch TV wise, as in not needing BBC or ITV, just the odd English spoken TV program.
Or if they can connect their computer to the TV, giving more viewing options. The remote control, means you dont even have to mess about hitting buttons on your pc to change channel
On my laptop I have a built in TV out option. I tried connecting the laptop to the TV yesterday and again was very pleased with the results.
As with anything computer related. Every one with ave different computers and setups. So what might work well here, someone else will try with a completely different system and get totally different results.
The laptop I have tried this on is a duel core 2ghz Pentium, built in graphics and 4 gig of ram. Just to give some idea.
