Spain has fourteen bank holidays, national holidays or what people commonly refer to as red days in Spain each year.

These Spanish bank holidays, national holidays, red days in Spain are a culmination of

Seven national holidays, which cover the whole of Spain (fiestas laborales de ámbito nacional)

Five regional days, which can vary from region /Spanish province) to region (Spanish province)in Spain

Two local holidays, which vary from town to town. These are chosen by the local city or town councils

Which gives the average Spanish worker a total of fourteen bank holiday days per year.

That also explains why towns and villages shut on different days. Something that we all come across from time to time, is to find one village shut and a mile or two down the road, Spain going about its normal daily routine.

Unlike the UK when bank holidays get moved to either a Friday or Monday to extend the weekend. The general rule of thumb is the days stay the same each year, so if it falls on a Tuesday, that's when the bank holiday, fiesta day will stay.

As well as the Spanish bank holidays, you might also find that a fiesta is going on.
For a list of the main Spanish fiestas, which are listed by month, please click on the following link.

I'm right down here in Andalucia, and I think that it's San Juan next Wednesday.

What I really hate is when they have the holiday days slap bang in the middle of the week. There have been a couple of occasions when I have taken my daughter to school only to find it closed because of some local holiday.

I have only been here six years, you would have thought I'd have known when the holidays were by now!
