Residents of 6 more of the houses lining the Playa Babalonia at Guardamar faced the sorry sight of their homes being demolished last Wednesday.
As the bulldozers moved in, the few brave enough to stay and watch were very bitter about the enforced destruction, which has been ordered by the Ministry of Environment.
The 100 houses which sit on the beach have a lease until 2018 and the Ministry intends to pull them all down by that date, as it wants the coastline to revert to a natural state. The houses which were demolished this week, as well as 12 which have previously gone, were considered to be in a dangerous condition due to erosion by the sea, which has undermined the foundations and caused the terraces of many to collapse already.
The homeowners spent most of the previous week clearing their possessions from the houses. They had been hoping for a stay of execution but their appeals have fallen on deaf ears within the Ministry. These homes have been owned by the same families since they were constructed almost 50 years ago and it was obviously upsetting to see them razed to the ground in the space of a day. Those present spoke of the many memories they have of times spent there with their parents and grandparents and cannot understand why this line of houses has been singled out for destruction when, as they said, there are thousands of hotels and houses built on the beach up and down the coastline in the province which remain untouched.
